Signs of Authenticity

How to assess whether a whisky listing appears authentic

WannaWhisky does not currently certify or authenticate individual bottles. However, buyers can take several practical steps to evaluate listings and reduce the risk of counterfeit or misrepresented items. Sellers benefit as well: accurate details and good photos help demonstrate legitimacy.

1. Examine photos carefully

High-quality photos are the strongest indicator of authenticity. Look for:

  • Close-ups of the label, capsule, and closure
  • Front and back labels clearly visible
  • Any unique identifiers (barcodes, batch numbers, holograms)
  • Clear images of the packaging
  • Consistent lighting and background
  • Damage, if any, is clearly displayed or even captured separately

If photos are blurry, missing, or look inconsistent, proceed with caution.

2. Compare labels with known references

Search for official product photos from the distillery or trusted retailers. Small discrepancies may indicate relabeling or tampering:

  • Incorrect fonts or typefaces
  • Misaligned text
  • Missing details (ABV, volume, batch info)
  • Incorrect logos or outdated branding

Many brands update their label designs over time; check if the version shown matches the stated year or release.

3. Verify bottle details

Check whether the information provided by the seller matches reality:

  • ABV and bottle size
  • Bottling year, age statement
  • Cask number (for single casks)
  • Series name

If something does not line up, ask the seller for clarification.

4. Assess fill level and seal

A very low fill level or visibly damaged seal may signal improper storage or previous tampering. Not all flaws indicate fraud, but they should prompt closer inspection.

5. Trust your instincts

If a listing feels “off”, like a price that is too good to be true, evasive answers, inconsistent photos, take it seriously. Buyer Protection helps reduce risk, but personal caution remains essential.

6. Report suspicious listings

Every listing includes a “Report listing” button. If you notice inconsistencies or have concerns, report them. Our team investigates all reports to help keep the marketplace safe.
